projects

Since inception, SAAYL had a strong presence amongst the youth by engaging schools and sporting organizations and utilizing its resources to empower said organizations with administrative and professional skills. Examples of such interventions are as follows:

    • SAAYL managed the full registration process of 1800 young rugby players at the Trafalgar High 2012 Rugby Festival. The said annual rugby festival targets to bring together in excess of 1800 young people from previously disadvantaged areas of the Cape Flats for a weekend of rugby festivities. During this process, SAAYL provides the participants with ongoing leadership, conflict resolution support and skills.
    • SAAYL has also through the Trafalgar Rugby Festival received the commitment of all the club and school participants of their willingness to participate in all future SAAYL programmes and activities on a ongoing basis.
    • SAAYL is also actively involved in the drum-line and marching band competition during October 2012. This event brings together approximately 6000 youth from various schools and youth organisations to participate in the said competition. The police and community forums of the various communities become the active supporters of the SAAYL programme, thus ensuring ongoing youth participation.
    • SAAYL also embarked on campaign to bring leadership development to the Eastern Cape. During the 2011 and 2012 period, various leadership programmes were held in the areas of Uitenhage and Port Elizabeth.
  • The ongoing entrepreneurial programme, where the young leaders are skilled with amongst other, the ability to cook a 70-litre pot of food, which they are able then able to sell and generate an income for the family home. The initial programmes food is usually distributed in the underprivileged areas.

It is the medium term vision of SAAYL to provide other provinces to benefit from the leadership empowerment that SAAYL has already embarked upon in the Western and Eastern Cape.

Implementation

The implementation strategy involves laying a foundation for a long-term partnership between the youth and the leaders which will help ensure the youth fulfill their potential and have a prosperous future. In an effort to have a long-term benefit, the organization will identify those with potential, skills, and the underrepresented as well as those who wish to be involved from these identified communities and then select and develop various program models for the various needs of these youth.

By creating a unique combination of programmes with contents ranging from leadership training to mentoring, the coordinators feel that the exposure to informative dialogues and education of unfamiliar topics would encourage future participation in the upcoming years in South Africa and make the youth more well-developed and prepared for tomorrow’s constantly-evolving environment.

Principles guiding our strategy for developing our future young leaders:

    • A constant and focused commitment to ensuring that the development of the South African youth remains a priority;
    • Active participation and support from various individuals, businesses in both local and other communities;
    • Understanding surrounding environments and the effects and challenges they present for the youth; and designed to blend in with, rather than impose upon the natural surroundings making it a perfect host for the SAAYL programmes.
    • Employing dynamic methods of educating the youth with an emphasis on a combination of both fundamental and complex concepts.
